Flat Stanley's Visit to the Blues Trail

I enjoyed having Stanley visit me in Clarksdale, Mississippi. Clarksdale is mostly an agricultural center and is well known for its blues history. Stanley enjoyed going on the Blues Trail. We also visited the sight where DeSoto discovered the mighty Mississippi River. Hope his trip will be a fun time.

Stanley returns to Taiwan

Greetings from Taiwan,

We are Zion's family residing in Taipei. It was so much fun having Flat Stanley visit with us. He flew from Lexington to Taipei in just over 15 hours. Flat Stanley enjoyed our island home that is located in Eastern Asia. Taiwan's terrain  is divided into two parts. It has flat to gently rolling plains in the west, where 90% of the population lives. The eastern two-thirds are mostly rugged forest-covered mountains. Stanley commented that Kentucky is 2.91 times bigger than Taiwan.

Stanley told us that winter in Kentucky was quite cold and snowy this year. Taiwan enjoys warm weather all year. The Tropic of Cancer runs straight through the middle of Taiwan bringing with it tropical and subtropical weather. Taiwan does not have 4 distinct seasons like Kentucky. The highest temperatures usually 95 degrees. The lowest temperatures rarely drop below 50 degrees. Taiwan is a very humid place.  Rainy season is from March to May. June to October is the typhoon season in Taiwan. We carried umbrellas every day of Stanley's visit.

Stanley spent most of his time in Taipei. The first place he visited was Taipei 101 building. The building has 101 stories above ground and five stories underground. It was the tallest building on earth from 2004-2010. It is currently in the top three.

There's a lot to see and do in Taiwan. We visited the beach, hot springs, water falls and a geological park with rocks that look like everyday objects. Hope you like the pictures.

Come back anytime,

Final Flat Stanley of 2013-14

Hi,
Flat Stanley just left Nashville, TN! While here, he stayed with 2 dogs- Gracie (the brindle) and Henry (the blonde).

Nashville is home to many animal shelters, including Crossroads Pets which was founded by Emmylou Harris.

Nashville is also known as Music City USA. The Ryman Auditorium is one of Nashville's most famous venues, and it hosts many special musical guests throughout the year.

There are literally hundreds of live music venues throughout the town. Some notables include Tootsie's Orchid Lounge, Exit In, Mercy Lounge, The Station Inn, Robert's Western World, and of course The Grand Ole Opry. Many famous artists live in and around Nashville since the music industry has roots here. Taylor Swift, Tim McGraw and Faith Hill, Dan and Patrick from The Black Keys, and Jack White to name a few.

Nashville is also known to some as "The Athens of the South." There are 19 colleges and universities in the Nashville Metro area. As seen in the photo below, Vanderbilt University is located here and is a renowned university as well as medical center. Vanderbilt Medical Center is the only Level One Trauma Center in middle TN taking care of patients from all across the southeast.

To help transport, the Vanderbilt Lifeflight helicopters and airplane are among the best in the country.

Belmont University is just around the corner from Vandy. It helps educate folks entering the music business with notable alumni such as Trisha Yearwood, Josh Turner and Brad Paisley.

With flatlands to the west and hills to the east, Nashville sits in a valley and has a moderate climate. Winters are typically mild with one or two snowfalls per year. The summers are hot and humid, but the fall and spring are marvelous!

Speaking of hot, Nashville is home to "Hot Chicken." This specialty is fried then pasted in a sauce of all types of hot peppers. The previous mayor even started a Hot Chicken Festival on July 4th, and it continues to bring a crowd every year. Prince's Hot Chicken started it all many years ago, and now there are several restaurants serving the fiery fowl. Eating in Nashville is a never ending adventure. The Catbird Seat, Husk, City House, Lockeland Table, and The Farmhouse have all been awarded for their uniqueness and use of fresh, local ingredients. Many things to do her in Nashville, so if you visit plan to stay a while!

Cheers,
Melissa

Happy Easter from Georgia

We were so excited to have Meredith’s Flat Stanley visit us in Warner Robins, GA.   Warner Robins is in the middle of the state, 90 miles south of the capital city, Atlanta.  The largest business in Warner Robins is Robins Air Force Base.

Right next to the base is the Museum of Aviation.  It is a really interesting place to visit and there is a display outside of airplanes that are no longer in use.  Flat Stanley and I had a good visit to the museum.  If you’ll look really closely in the pictures you’ll see Flat Stanley standing in the bushes.

Georgia is known as the Peach State.  Many peaches are grown in our area.  In early spring the peach trees that have been bare during the winter are covered with beautiful pink blossoms.  Then the green leaves begin to grow and the blossoms seem to disappear but those flowers are the beginning of the wonderful peaches.  First the peaches are very tiny, hard and green.  They grow and begin to turn beautiful shades of orange and red.  There are many varieties of peaches.  I have included a list of the ones you can buy at Lane Packing Company.

The early peaches have a CS after their name.

That means that the peach clings (sticks) to the stone (seed.)  The later ones  that have an FS after their name are called freestone and that means that the peach does not stick to the stone (seed).  You’ll notice that a few are SF which means semi-freestone.

Flat Stanley and I went to Lane Packing Company one of the largest peach companies in our area. You will notice on the sign they also sell pecans but they sell other local produce as well.  Flat Stanley and I shared a delicious cup of fresh peach ice cream.  I will have to admit I ate most of it!  Then we took a couple of pictures of us having a bushel of fun!

It was Easter season while Flat Stanley was here.  He decided to hide with the bunnies in my Easter tree.  Think the bunnies really liked having a boy visit them!

I am sending Flat Stanley on his way to other wonderful adventures!  We hope Flat Stanley will tell Meredith he had a good time and she and her family should visit us in Georgia.

Flat Stanley in Oyster Bay

To Mrs. Gutteridge and the students at Kore Academy (especially Meredith!):

Thank you for allowing us to participate in your Flat Stanley project. Stanley visited Locust Valley Middle School. You'll see that he visited the school library.

He also posed in a VERY STINKY locker of an 8th grade boy, Park Farren.

We live in Lattingtown, New York. It is a village of Oyster Bay. Our town is on the north shore of Long Island and is 30 miles east of New York City. We visit NYC a few times per year.

Many movies are filmed in our town. Have you heard of the the movie, "Noah," to be released soon? Well, the production crew built the HUGE ark for the movie right here in our town! The ark used for the movie is 170 feet long and 85 feet high!

We wish Flat Stanley safe travels. He's heading to Georgia now.

Kindly,
The Farren Family
